3.Luigi Colani, Whose Ideas Come from Nature

Luigi ColaniLuigi Colani is a German who was born in Berlin in 1928, and is famous for his opinions such as "an egg represents the highest form of packaging since the dawn of time," or "no straight lines in the universe." He developed unique bio-forms utilizing curves which he believes accord with the rules of nature, and applied them widely to the designs of ballpoint pens, fashions, cars, architecture, and aircrafts. When he first came to Japan, a Colani boom arose.

Colani, who loved photography, was naturally interested in camera design. He had previously proposed to Canon Europe, Inc. a holding attachment for the F-1, showing the mockup. When the proposal was presented to the company, the then general manager of the design department got the impression that Colani was "such an unique designer." The camera design department at that time had absolute confidence in its own design, while at the same time, it was in fact seeking a direction for future camera design.

It was just around this time that Canon commissioned Luigi Colani, who was introduced to Canon through ODS, a design company serving as his agent in Japan, to make a proposal for "a camera in the near future." The experimental project with Colani, which took a year and a half to complete, resulted in "5 Systems", Luigi Colani's new design concept presenting how the camera should be in the 1990s. Being exhibited in the 1984 Photokina, the 5 Systems mockups produced a major sensation.
